Does anyone in Montreal want a big coffee table? :boost_requested:

We're getting rid of it because we have two and don't need it

@JordiGH unlikely! they were only passed out hand-to-hand, not posted up anywhere. We'll likely have some at this weekend!

@JordiGH thank you!! We're actually re-printing these flyers this week :)

We're an invite only Montreal instance. Check out our about page and see if you vibe with us!

fediverse, positive doing out best! 💞

Here is a long but very fun and nice explainer of Mastodon/the Fediverse from @elilla

If you are still feeling a bit lost here it's worth the read!

Now available! :mastodon:

My in-depth comparative review of eight Mastodon apps for iPhone

Please boost (or share on Twitter) 🙏

If you blinked you missed it but I ran a small update to bring us to the bleeding edge version of and now our emojis should not appear like they are trying to leap off the page.

Thanks as always to @darius :CoolGarfield:

We'll try to post some explanations about the new features and also update our about page soon, but for now we need a burrito break! 🌯

During this process things really went off the rails (literally because I don't really know how to use ruby on rails) but the developer of Hometown @darius absolutely saved the day and is undoubtedly one of the coolest people doing the coolest things for the fediverse!

Thank you @darius !!! :PunkFelix: :hcGoblin: :PunkFelix:

Wow hello punkhouse, after much toiling in the command line mines and many harrowing moments of almost losing everything, we are now running the up to date version of a fork of Mastodon called Hometown (a fork is like a modded version that brings us extra features).

We can now enjoy the features of Hometown ( as well as the newest features of Mastodon ( )

:PunkFelix: :PunkFelix: :PunkFelix:

Hey punkhousers check just made an 'announcement' about some upcoming maintenance, and it's a good time to learn about where announcements show up (on the web there's a little megaphone icon above your timeline, and mobile apps will show announcements somewhere.. In Tusky it's in the side menu!)

Posts on Mastodon, also known as Toots, have a privacy setting.

You can change a toot's privacy while writing it by clicking on the privacy icon. Depending on what the setting is, and depending on how you access Mastodon, privacy will look like a globe 🌐 🌎 or a lock 🔒 or a group 👥 or an envelope ✉️ or an @ sign.

Pick the privacy you want before you publish a toot, as you can't alter it later (unless you delete the toot).

You can also choose a default privacy setting in your account settings. New toots will automatically use the default privacy unless you change it.

On the website, go to Preferences > Other > Posting Privacy, choose the default privacy you want and press "Save Changes".

On the official app, go to ⚙️ Settings > The Boring Zone > Account Settings and then log into the website.

- if you click somebody's name to see their profile, you don't see all their posts! you see a copy of the profile in your instance, and your instance doesn't fetch old posts if nobody was following.

there's a link you can click to open their profile directly in
their instance; then you can see all public posts.

- there's a "media" tab in the profile pages, and if you look at it you can see all the photos & videos someone uploaded! (though many instances delete old medias to save up space).

Reminder to our users ! There is a lot of new activity on the fediverse the last few days - if you come across anything hateful, fashy or spammy on our global timeline, or if you are experiencing harassment, you can report it (click the ··· ) and we'll assess the sitch and defederate with instances that promote stuff we'd all rather not deal with.

If there are particular users who post stuff you personally don't feel like seeing, you can always feel free to smash those mute/block buttons!

A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines!

So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.

This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature.
