Remember people can check out public posts and profiles easily without a Mastodon account. It's a great way to post updates for a project that people can follow (even people not using Mastodon)

Are there some words, phrases or hashtags you don't want to see when browsing on Mastodon?

You can filter out posts with unwanted words/phrases/tags by going to Preferences > Filters, click "Add new filter", then choose the filter's settings and press "ADD NEW FILTER".

By default this will hide posts with that phrase or keyword, and when the filter is removed the posts reappear. Optionally, you can set it to make the posts permanently disappear from your view even if the filter is removed.

Oops I forgot this won the poll so I enabled it earlier but then forgot to post, sorry/you're welcome :jokerfied: :jokerfied:

The best way to post an image on Mastodon:

1. Write your post and attach the image by clicking on the paperclip 📎

2. Don't press Toot yet! Instead, click on "Edit" in the corner of the image.

3. Move the circle so that the 16:9 preview looks nice. This is especially important on images that are portrait or square orientations.

4. Add a text description in the box, so that people browsing in audio will know what is in the image. (A lot of blind people browse the internet in audio through screen readers. Image text also gives you a chance to add details beyond your character limit.)

5. When you've done all that, click "Apply" and then "Toot!"

6. You can read image descriptions by hovering the mouse over the image after posting.

We are updated to the very important v3.4.6 ! :black_computer:

does everyone here know has started!? check @funaday for more!!

DID YOU KNOW that Mastodon makes it super easy to add text descriptions to the images that you post? It only takes a few seconds, but can help people who use screen readers tell the difference between a cute photo of your dog and a burning cop car :acab: Even a few words description is better than nothing, and unlike other platforms it doesn't add to your character limit or change the text content of your accompanying post.

Let's make the punk house more accessible! will be down for a little bit at 21h EST while we do some regular maintenance!

New here? Remember that Twitter is optimized to make you into passive consumers, by en(r/g)aging you with content that you don't choose yourself.

Here, that doesn't happen. But it also means you're responsible to find people to follow.

It will take some work.

If you're willing to put that in, you'll find a wide variety of friendly people that will be happy to have meaningful conversions and laugh and cry together with you.

Start by searching and looking at who other people follow.

Pro tip, cont'd: For this reason, it's also more customary here for people to NOT use aster*sks or a1ternate spe11ings to obscure terms which might get flagged on other social media. LOTS of people on the fediverse use filters to customize their user experience, and if you replace letters in words it might bypass someone's filter and expose them to content they'd prefer not to see!

Pro tip: it's very simple to mute a term or hashtag that you don't wanna see on your timeline! Not feeling the spirit ? Don't want to see certain things on your timeline? If you're logged in in a web browser, you can go to "preferences" and then "filters" and add whatever terms or hashtags you don't wanna see. (You will still see a little bar in your timeline that says "filtered" whenever a post is not included, so you can tell that it's working and how often)
